Just a short drive away from San José Airport, Costa Rica, you can find this outstanding national park. With lush, tropical scenery and steep mountains reaching up to nearly 9,000 feet, this unique corner of the world is always tinged with a bit of excitement – there might be active volcanos! But what is life without a bit of danger? In the end, the deepest crater is 'only' 950 feet … Add to that geysers, glowing lava and coyote packs and you are up for a real Indiana Jones-style adventure. Make sure to arrive early for good views before the clouds roll in, and round out your weekend break with a skinny dip in the green waters of Botos, a gorgeous crater lake. At least this one has not erupted for more than 7,500 years. And if all goes well, you will still be able to enjoy a traditional Costa Rican breakfast with freshly pressed fruit juices and breath-taking mountain views before catching your airplane back home.
